Five recipes using produce available at St Petersburg markets this week highlight cucumbers, strawberries, raspberries, zucchini and cabbage picked from local plots.
Summer harvests peak in July, giving residents direct access to nutrient-dense items that support daily energy needs without heavy imports. Local wellness programs emphasize these ingredients to counter typical seasonal dips in fresh vegetable intake.
Shoppers at Sennoy Market on Sadovaya Street and members of the Petrogradsky District community garden initiative report steady supplies of berries and greens through the first half of the month. Both locations operate daily from 7 a.m. and accept orders through the city’s wellness app for pickup before noon.
City health department figures released June 30 showed a 42 percent rise in local produce sales compared with May, with strawberries listed at 180 rubles per kilogram at central stalls on July 9.
Current stalls feature firm cucumbers from farms near Pushkin and early zucchini from Vasileostrovsky greenhouses. Raspberries and red currants arrive in small batches from plots along the Neva, while cabbage heads remain crisp into mid-July.
A simple strawberry-cucumber salad combines sliced cucumbers with halved strawberries, a drizzle of sunflower oil and fresh dill from Sennoy vendors. Raspberry overnight oats use rolled oats soaked in kefir with a handful of berries for breakfast at under 300 calories. Grilled zucchini rounds tossed with garlic and parsley serve as a side for evening meals near Krestovsky Island parks. A currant and yogurt smoothie blends frozen berries with local milk for a quick afternoon snack. Cabbage and tomato slaw mixes shredded cabbage with chopped tomatoes and a light vinegar dressing for weekday lunches.
Residents can start with one recipe this weekend by visiting either market before 10 a.m. to secure the freshest items and adjust portions to household size.
